Neuro — Parkinson’s

How our physiotherapists can help

Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurological disorder that primarily affects movement. It results from the loss of dopamine-producing cells in the brain. Common symptoms include tremors, rigidity, bradykinesia (slow movement), and postural instability.

How Physiotherapy Helps Parkinson's Disease

Physiotherapy plays a crucial role in managing Parkinson's symptoms and improving quality of life. It focuses on maintaining and enhancing mobility, balance, and functional independence.

Physiotherapy Treatments for Parkinson's Disease

  • Gait Training: Exercises to improve walking patterns, stride length, and balance, helping to reduce shuffling and freezing episodes.

  • Balance and Postural Training: Exercises to enhance stability and prevent falls, addressing postural instability and balance deficits.

  • Strength Training: Exercises to maintain muscle strength and combat rigidity, improving overall mobility.

  • Flexibility Exercises: Stretching and range of motion exercises to reduce stiffness and improve flexibility.

  • Movement Strategies: Techniques to improve movement initiation and coordination, helping to overcome bradykinesia.

  • Functional Training: Activities to improve daily living skills, such as dressing, bathing, and transfers.

  • Respiratory Exercises: Breathing exercises to maintain lung function and improve respiratory capacity.

  • Education and Support: Providing information on managing symptoms, adapting to changes, and accessing support resources.
