Schroth Method

Schroth Method for Treating Scoliosis

At Prohealth Asia, our physiotherapists are trained in the Schroth Method, which is a non-surgical and evidence-based approach for scoliosis treatment.

Schroth Therapy is a highly specialised form of exercise therapy that focuses on correcting spinal curvature, improving posture, and promoting overall spinal health in people diagnosed with scoliosis. It was founded in 1921 by Katharina Schroth in Germany, and the International Schroth 3-dimensional Scoliosis Treatment (ISST) is based consequently on the original Schroth therapy developed and practiced in the Asklepios Katharina Schroth clinics. ISST is now practised by both physicians and therapists internationally.

Schroth Therapy has developed into the most recognized conservative exercise-based approach for scoliosis treatment. The exercise method is suitable for children, adolescents, and adults. The exercises can be practiced with or without the use of a brace or even post-surgery.

Key Principles of the Schroth Method

Postural Awareness: emphasis on becoming aware of your individual spinal curvature and learning to maintain a corrected posture throughout daily activities. This awareness helps to prevent further progression of the curvature and encourages better alignment.

Specific Breathing Exercises: The Schroth Method utilizes specific breathing techniques to enhance lung capacity, improve ribcage mobility, and optimize spinal alignment. These breathing exercises are tailored to each individual’s curve pattern and are performed in conjunction with corrective movements.

Corrective Movements: The Schroth Method incorporates a series of customized exercises and movements designed to address the specific curvature of the spine. These exercises aim to elongate and de-rotate the spine, promoting improved balance, strength, and flexibility.

The Schroth Method must be led by specially-trained therapists who have a deep understanding of scoliosis biomechanics and the principles of the method. Our ISST-certified physiotherapists work closely with scoliosis patients to develop personalized treatment plans based on their unique curvature patterns, individual needs, and goals.

We provide hands-on guidance and feedback to ensure correct posture and execution of exercises. Patients are also taught how to apply the principles of the method in their everyday lives, promoting self-management and long-term benefits.

With a combination of postural awareness, specific breathing exercises, and targeted corrective movements, the Schroth Method addresses scoliosis comprehensively.

Our Specialised Treatment Programs for Scoliosis

Patients can be diagnosed with scoliosis at different ages. In children, scoliosis is usually a pain-free condition, however the curvature can progress drastically during growth spurts, which can affect appearance and the ability to exercise. In adults, scoliosis usually doesn’t progress quickly but they often experience pain which worsens with age. It is important to recognise that as we age, our bone density also decreases. A decrease in bone density may lead to a further increase in the scoliosis curvature.

Our ISST-trained Schroth physiotherapist at Posture Plus has specific knowledge about the clinical assessment, the pathomechanism of scoliosis, the implementation of specific exercise and mobilization techniques, and the prescription of posture advice and individualized home exercise programs.

At Posture Plus, you can be guaranteed a comprehensive scoliosis treatment program tailored to meet your unique needs. Through personalized care and ongoing support, we aim to empower you on your journey to improved spinal health.
